Pretty striking and tasteful lamps came into existence when the Greek started experimenting with terra-cotta and these lamps replaced torches. And with the invention of central burners, there was a great improvement in lamp making. Towards late 17th century, gas lamps started to get commercialized. And early 19th century saw the invention of the incandescent light bulb by Thomas Alva Edison. This started replacing the gas lamps. And it is specifically because of this invention that table lamps started to get popularized.

The Pouring Light Lampshade Concept

The background is stark white in color and as clean as a blank slate. Against the pure white background sits a tilted bucket, which has paint pouring out of its wide open mouth. The bucket is tilted at a comfortable angle with the paint pouring out of it in an artistic, flowing manner. The bucket and paint cascading from it match the color tone of the background – snow white; if it had been any other color, the installation would probably not have the dramatic effect it currently has.

The snow white colored bucket and paint are not a piece of installation or conceptual art as some of you may have imagined. The paint and bucket ensemble is a modern day lampshade concept born out of the mind of designer Yeongwoo Kim. This artistic lampshade concept is aptly titled ‘Pouring Light’.

Traditional lampshade designs have usually focused on a covering shade, light bulbs, and a lamp stand. In a traditional lampshade, the bulb is screwed on to a socket placed inside a reflector bowl. The reflector bowl is attached to a lamp stand, which gives the shade stability and support. The user can turn on and off the lampshade with a power switch.

In Pouring Light, Yeongwoo Kim has used the basic framework of a traditional lampshade – covering shade, bulb, and stand-in a manner that is both, innovative and aesthetically creative. Your eyes will light up in delight as it rolls over the smooth, sleek body of the inventive lampshade concept.

Pouring Light consists of a white colored paint bucket that is tilted at an angle. The paint bucket fulfills the function of a covering shade as well. The stiff, molten white paint flowing from the bucket is the perfect combination of form and function. It functions as the ‘bulb’ of the lampshade as well as the ‘lamp stand’.

What makes Yeongwoo Kim’s creative lampshade concept an eagerly awaited reality is the fact that Pouring Light would use energy saving LEDs rather than power hungry light bulbs. The lampshade concept seems a perfect blend of visually appealing looks and user friendly function.

The next generation lampshade concept works on the principle of phosphorescence to create a lingering and mesmerizing effect. The Bicycle Chain Lamp Lights Up Your Table

A bicycle without its chain is not a bicycle. But the chain is not limited to a bicycle. Its structure and function have allowed designers to put it to a number of other uses. In fact these are areas which are not related to a bicycle in any way.

For example, one of the recent entrants in the list is the ‘B-Chain Lamp’ by Korean designer Cho Hyung Suk.

The B-Chain Lamp is a table lamp that functions like any other of its kind. It has a base and a lamp shade with a leg in between. Like many other table lamps this lamp too can allow adjustments in height. So what is so unique about this B-Chain Lamp? Take a look at its leg. It is made from a part of a bicycle chain.

The chain is one of a bicycle’s most important parts. It is this part that facilitates the movement of the vehicle. Without it, no matter how hard you pedal, the bike will not move – not even an inch, from its place. This is so because the chain is made up of numerous interlocking units. When one part moves, it forces the other to move. Since it is in the form of a circular chain, the entire unit starts to go round and round in one place forcing the rear wheel to move, which in turn forces the front one to move.

Cho Hyung Suk has made use of this interlocking functionality of the chain. There are four single modules with eight joints in all that comprise this lamp’s leg. Stainless steel nuts and bolts have been used to fasten all the joints. The eight joints grant great amount of flexibility to this lamp allowing it to be positioned at various heights and orientations. As a user you can also add additional modules to the lamp’s leg or take away some to get a different height. What you have over here is a super flexible lamp shade that can be adjusted for every seating position.

As of now, Cho Hyung Suk has made only two variants of the B-Chain Lamp – red and white. The basic color remains the same but the color of the wire, nuts, and bolts vary. The red lamp has a red wire and bold red bolts, while the white one has a white wire and steel bolts. The size of the lamp is 230x170x220mm and gives a very stylish appearance. It is a designer product that you would definitely appreciate your table top.

Quin Lampshade is One of its Kind Lighting Piece

Sometimes subtle décor ambience complete with exquisite accessories can work wonders for one’s home. Remodeling is an expensive affair whereas just painting the walls in the favorite colors and then spending time picking up the right fillers is something that gives you room for experimentation all the time. The Quin Lampshade from designer Bathsheba Grossman is perfect for such home environments where interiors are light and understated.

When lit up, the lampshade throws up a beautiful pattern of light and shadow on the walls around it. It is round in shape and needs to be suspended from the ceiling. To the inexperienced eyes, it may come across as an unconventional disco ball, but the idea behind its architecture runs deeper. The piece is more of result of the sculptor’s exploration of the five Platonic solids. The twelve-sided dodecahedron elicits the spiritual unity of the four elements in a well synchronized natural universe.
