Museum Table Lamp is Functional Architecture

It does look like an abstract decorative object placed to enhance the appeal of a typical modern apartment. But it is in fact a Museum Table Lamp design, and the New York Times has called it ‘Functional Architecture for our night table’. I think it is a befitting title for this new age lamp.

This New Museum Table Lamp from Thinkofthe is a laser cut design made up of translucent white acrylic with a white fluorescent bulb inside. It is priced at $1200. I think the designer was inspired by the classic city view, with several tall skyscrapers and buildings in blocks through the bedroom window, to have come up with this innovative design for a night lamp. This new lamp will fit very well into the modern looking apartment in any city.

The Bicycle Chain Lamp Lights Up Your Table

A bicycle without its chain is not a bicycle. But the chain is not limited to a bicycle. Its structure and function have allowed designers to put it to a number of other uses. In fact these are areas which are not related to a bicycle in any way.

For example, one of the recent entrants in the list is the ‘B-Chain Lamp’ by Korean designer Cho Hyung Suk.

The B-Chain Lamp is a table lamp that functions like any other of its kind. It has a base and a lamp shade with a leg in between. Like many other table lamps this lamp too can allow adjustments in height. So what is so unique about this B-Chain Lamp? Take a look at its leg. It is made from a part of a bicycle chain.

The chain is one of a bicycle’s most important parts. It is this part that facilitates the movement of the vehicle. Without it, no matter how hard you pedal, the bike will not move – not even an inch, from its place. This is so because the chain is made up of numerous interlocking units. When one part moves, it forces the other to move. Since it is in the form of a circular chain, the entire unit starts to go round and round in one place forcing the rear wheel to move, which in turn forces the front one to move.

Cho Hyung Suk has made use of this interlocking functionality of the chain. There are four single modules with eight joints in all that comprise this lamp’s leg. Stainless steel nuts and bolts have been used to fasten all the joints. The eight joints grant great amount of flexibility to this lamp allowing it to be positioned at various heights and orientations. As a user you can also add additional modules to the lamp’s leg or take away some to get a different height. What you have over here is a super flexible lamp shade that can be adjusted for every seating position.

As of now, Cho Hyung Suk has made only two variants of the B-Chain Lamp – red and white. The basic color remains the same but the color of the wire, nuts, and bolts vary. The red lamp has a red wire and bold red bolts, while the white one has a white wire and steel bolts. The size of the lamp is 230x170x220mm and gives a very stylish appearance. It is a designer product that you would definitely appreciate your table top.

LightBug Color Changing Night Lamp for Lifting Spirits

The Whimsical Wireless Light Switch

In this day and age of wireless gadgets, why should the most used gadgets in our homes be ‘wired’? So, here is a whimsical gift in the form of a Wireless Light Switch. The New Turn On and Off Lamp Design by Lana Savettiere

The Turn on lamp so named because it is designed to look like the on/off switch on electronic devices, is a cool and interesting new design by Lana Savettiere Architetti. The uniqueness of this lamp is that it can be switched on or off simply by turning it to either the left or right side.

The two Italian designers Marco Lana and Alberto Savettiere, who together form the architect firm that designed this lamp have a multi purpose approach to their designs that make everything aesthetic but at the same time very practical, such as this lamp was designed as part of a furniture series with the theme of on – off. The lamp is rechargeable and can thus be used anywhere, in your room or when you are out in the garden for a midnight picnic, and the colored plastic table lamp is 30 cm in diameter and 10cm in its width.

The lamp is made of opal flexiglass with the central illumination through internal LED lights. It is also identical on both sides and can thus be kept either way or any place you want to place it and viewed from various angles.

The Matryoshka Nesting Doll Light Design

Isn’t is beautiful to look at? Extremely pleasing to the eye, I’d say. To know what they are, you need to know the story of the Russian Nesting Dolls or the Matryoshka dolls, more popularly known as the Babushka dolls which are part of the Russian culture that symbolizes fertility and are connected to motherhood. Inspired by the same Mathmos Design Studio brings to us the Babushka lights.

The Babushka lights are a set of lights that nest inside each other just like the russian dolls. It is a very thoughtful and innovative design of lights. These lights come in several colors one inside the other which are turned on and off by pushing down on top of the light with your hand.

Strikingly Beautiful Bulb Design: Birdlight

There are always some designs that sweep you off your feet and crumble your vocabulary into pieces. That is exactly what happened to me when I first laid my eyes on Birdlight. A stupendous artisitic light ornament that can enfeeble the presence of anything else in your decor. Such is the beauty of its bird chassis, that it even compliments even the plain boring walls around it. The sprawling wings and the bulgy centre to house a tungsten bulb looks exceptionally brilliant. Chen and Karlsson are seeling this through the Swedish design store Designtorget. No word on the price, but I am sure people who want to hatch this, will trade anything in their closet to get it home.
